When your child needs surgery

Little people are a big priority to us, and we are proud to have Bay Area Houston’s only Pediatric Surgery Department, providing expert surgical care for neonatal patients, newborns, infants, toddlers and young adults.

From hernia repair and appendectomies to repairing congenital deformities, our pediatric surgery team is designed with the special needs of children in mind – from their smaller size and body functions to their distinctive emotional needs. We know it can be scary for a child to be in the hospital, and our compassionate team helps ease the anxieties of children and their families.

Anesthesia 101

Anesthesia goes hand in hand with surgery – and it basically means a set of drugs given to a patient so that the patient has little to no pain during a surgical procedure. Some anesthetic drugs also prevent a patient from remembering any events regarding his/her surgery. An anesthesiologist is a doctor who is specially trained in anesthesiology and pain relief, and is an integral part of our surgical team. Prior to surgery, an anesthesiologist will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the patient to determine any anesthetic concerns. Any patient undergoing a procedure will meet with the anesthesiologist prior to the procedure. While in the Operating Room, the anesthesiologist either administers anesthetic drugs or medically directs a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) to administer anesthesia.  After surgery, the anesthesiologist monitors the patient's recovery from anesthesia.

  • General – Complete absence of sensation and consciousness induced by drugs given intravenously (in a vein) or inhaled.
  • Local – This type of anesthesia is specific to one area of the body. For example: finger surgery or removal of a small screw/pin.
  • Regional – This type of anesthesia is used when a block effect is desired. For example: an epidural, or an entire arm or foot. Spinal anesthesia may be used to numb you from the chest down.
  • Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC) – This type of care is when an anesthesiologist provides sedation as needed and monitors the patient’s vital signs throughout a procedure.

Discover the Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery

Less pain. Smaller scars. Faster recovery. That’s what Clear Lake Regional Medical Center offers with the highest level of advanced surgical care utilizing the latest da Vinci Robotic Surgical System. This robotic system can be used on complex minimally invasive surgical procedures, including gynecology and urology procedures. For years, traditional surgeries and laparoscopies were the only surgical options available for patients with certain medical conditions. With small, dime-sized incisions – instead of 6-to-12-inch incisions that are common in surgeries – surgeons can perform procedures quicker and easier.

da Vinci® Offers More Options for Urological And Prostate Patients

Precision is critical when it comes to operating on the delicate prostate and urological areas. The da Vinci Robotic Surgical System gives surgeons the precision and control they need – and a less invasive method of surgery – that is proven to speed healing and reduce recovery. Da Vinci makes operating in tightly confined areas of the urological system possible for medical conditions such as prostate, bladder or kidney cancer and ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction.

The da Vinci®Surgical System puts a surgeon's hands at the controls of a state-of-the-art robotic platform, where they operate while viewing a high-definition 3D image of the surgical area. As the surgeon's fingers grasp the master controls, the system seamlessly translates hand, wrist and finger movements into precise real-time movements of surgical instruments inside the patient.

Da Vinci® gives surgeons all the tools they need to offer patients many benefits, including:

  • Less pain and blood loss
  • Fewer complications
  • Less scarring
  • A shorter hospital stay
  • Faster return to normal daily activities
